Extrusion is one of our core refinement technologies for creating ingredients from flours and proteins from different raw materials. At our specialized extrusion facility in Helmond, Netherlands, we apply a controlled thermo-mechanical process to convert these raw materials into highly functional ingredients.

Extrusion

Crespel & Deiters extrusion expertise transforming wheat, cereals, and proteins into functional ingredients through controlled thermo-mechanical processing, precisely shaping texture, structure, and nutritional properties for food, pet food, feed, and industrial applications.

Transforming raw material into functional textures

By precisely controlling pressure, temperature, and mechanical energy, we shape texture, structure and nutritional properties with high precision. This makes extrusion a key technology for developing modern food concepts, pet food and feed applications.

How extrusion worksHeat and pressure

Extrusion is a dynamic process where raw materials are moved through a barrel by rotating screws under pressure and heat. The material is cooked and texturized before being forced through a die. As soon as pressure and temperature drop, the texturate rapidly expands and cools into its final shape. This transformation gives us the ability to create a wide variety of textures – from crispy inclusions to fibrous structures – precisley tailored to the requirements of each application.

By fine-tuning the recipe, adjusting process parameters and choosing the right configuration, extrusion offers endless possibilities in product development from crisp inclusions, to fibrous texturates. It is a vital technology for a broad range of food, pet food and nutrition applications.

Extrusion solutions for food, pet food and feed

Extrusion is the refining technology of choice for implementing new innovative trends for food, pet food and feed.

Extrusion solutions for food

Textured proteins, crispies and more.

Extruded proteins and cereal ingredients support a wide range of concepts – from plant-based foods to snacks to sports nutrition. They provide structure, texture and, where needed, additional protein.

Textured wheat and other plant proteins enrich vegetarian and vegan products with both bite and protein, helping to create convincing meat-alternative concepts.

Crispies and extruded flakes add crunch and bite to confectionery, breakfast cereals, bars, yogurt toppings and sports nutrition products.

High-protein crispies increase the nutritional value of snacks and bars while maintaining an appealing eating quality and texture.

Extrusion solutions for pet food and feed

Functionality and digestibility.

Extruded cereal products help balance texture, processing behavior and digestibility in pet food and feed formulations.

Extruded pre-gelatinized flours basing on wheat offer defined water uptake and good digestibility, making process control and product quality more predictable.

Extruded pre-gelatinized flours can act as binders in compound feeds or serve as a base for milk replacers in young animal nutrition.

Extrusion enables precise control over starch cooking and structure, which has a direct impact on how the product behaves in processing. Plus it makes feed products better digestible.

Co-Creative Product Development

From first idea to scalable concepts

We act as a driving force and strategic development partner for innovative extruded food solutions. Building on these insights, we develop high-value, scalable solutions designed to set new standards in functionality, texture, efficiency and taste. Our deep expertise in extruded cereals and proteins – across both processing and product performance – helps customers accelerate development, reduce risk and turn ideas into commercially successful products.

Innovation Center in Helmond

Our Innovation Center in Helmond is a state-of-the-art development hub, equipped with its own lab-scale extruder. This allows us to simulate real manufacturing environments, test new product concepts and validate recipes for extruded proteins and starch-based applications under authentic processing conditions.

Customers benefit from reduced development risks, faster decision-making and a seamless pathway from idea to industrial production. Early sample quantities can be produced to support internal evaluations, sensory testing and market validation, enabling our partners to plan launches with greater confidence and reliability.

For customers looking to extend their capabilities, we also offer extrusion as a flexible outsourcing solution – delivering tailored, commercially viable product concepts developed to their precise requirements.

Connected to R&D & Service

Extrusion is never a standalone capability – it is an integral part of our end-to-end innovation ecosystem and closely connected to our R&D and service teams.

Formulations are developed in close collaboration with our application experts and then validated, optimized and refined through systematic trials before moving toward scale-up. Where needed, our technical service supports the industrial implementation directly on customer production lines, ensuring that concepts perform reliably in large-scale operations.
